 Winter Projects for Your Home

Category: Our Blog

You cannot do some maintenance projects in the winter because of the weather conditions. These projects need to be finished before the cold weather starts. Here are a few winter projects for you home that will get everything ready for the cold weather.

Seal Cracks and Holes

Your home sometimes develops cracks and holes along the exterior walls that can allow cold air to pour in when winter comes. A relatively easy project is to seal the cracks and holes around your home. Look around doors, window frames and pipes. You can use caulk or filler putty to seal most holes. This takes very little time although the results will be noticeable in the winter.

Check the Gutters

Go outside and check the gutters along the roof of your home. They might have filled up with debris and leaves during the fall and summer. Clean out your gutters so that you will not experience problems with ice dams or clogs in the winter. Make certain that the gutters are firmly attached to the fascia. Replace any brackets or nails that seem damaged. This will help to protect your house in the winter.

Clean the Heating System

Take a moment to clean out your heating system before you really need to start using it. Use a vacuum to clean the dust off the heater. Use the vacuum to clean all the vents and registers. Replace any filters in the system. A simple and fast cleaning could allow your heating system to operate more efficiently.

Prune Trees and Bushes

A final project is to prune the trees and bushes outside your home. Bad winter weather and ice can cause branches to come crashing down onto your home. Prune away any dead, diseased or damaged branches that are close to your house. This will make it safer for everyone in the winter.
