Tips for Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

Category: Our Blog

When most people think of slips, they probably think of ice patches or very wet floors—things that aren’t encountered every day. However, the truth is that no matter where you are, even slightly slippery or unstable ground can lead to a harmful slip, trip or fall.

Slips, trips and falls can cause serious injuries, such as concussions, broken bones and back injuries. And, even if you try to catch your balance when you slip, you can cause sprains or strains to your muscles and joints. With that in mind, here are some tips to avoid slips, trips and falls at all times:

  • Be sure to keep an eye on the path ahead of you when you’re walking around. Your path could be obstructed by curbs, roadwork or loose ground. Also keep in mind that you should walk in well-lit areas. Not only is this a great personal security tip, but it will also help you remain aware of your footing.
  • Carry a flashlight with you if you know that you’ll be walking through an area with little or no light. If you don’t have a flashlight, most smartphones have built in flashlights that use the rear camera’s flash system.
  • Adjust your pace according to the environment around you. Plus, you should keep in mind that you won’t get anywhere faster if you slip or fall.
  • Make wide turns around corners so you don’t bump into something or someone.
  • Always wear appropriate footwear. Also, remember that shoes or boots with deep treads are preferable to maintain good footing.
  • Clean your home of any slip or trip hazards. These could include spills, electrical cords or other obstructions that block walkways.
  • Use appropriate equipment if you’re working outside. Additionally, if you perform work on a ladder, be sure to maintain at least three points of contact on the ladder at all times.
